Frequently Asked Questions
❓ How do I scan a vinyl record?
Simply open the app and tap the scan button. You can:
- Scan the cover art: Take a photo of the album cover
- Scan the barcode: Point your camera at the barcode on the record sleeve
- Search by catalog number: Manually enter the catalog number found on the label
The app will instantly identify the record and show you detailed information.
💰 How accurate are the price valuations?
Vinyl Identifier uses real-time market data from Discogs, the world's largest music database and marketplace. Prices reflect actual recent sales and current listings. Keep in mind that condition, pressing details, and market demand can all affect a record's value. The app shows you median and range values to give you the best market overview.
📚 How do I add records to my collection?
After scanning a record, simply tap "Add to Collection" button. You can organize your collection by artist, genre, or date added. Your collection is automatically backed up to the cloud, so you can access it from any device.
💾 Can I export my collection?
Yes! Go to Settings → Export Collection. You can export your entire collection to a CSV file, which can be opened in Excel, Google Sheets, or imported into other vinyl tracking apps. This is great for insurance purposes or sharing your collection.
🔍 The app can't identify my record. What should I do?
Try these tips:
- Ensure good lighting when taking photos
- Keep the camera steady and in focus
- Try scanning the barcode instead of the cover
- Manually search using the catalog number on the record label
- Check for variant pressings - some records have multiple releases
If you still can't find it, the record might be a very rare or regional pressing not yet in the Discogs database.
🎯 What's the difference between Collection and Wishlist?
Collection: Records you currently own. Use this to track your vinyl library and see the total value of your collection.
Wishlist: Records you want to find or buy in the future. Perfect for keeping track of albums you're hunting for at record stores or online.
☁️ Is my data backed up?
Yes! Your collection and wishlist are automatically synced to the cloud. This means you can access your data across multiple devices and you won't lose your collection if you switch phones or reinstall the app.
🆓 Is Vinyl Identifier free to use?
