How to Use the Eisenhower Matrix

What is the Eisenhower Matrix? +
The Eisenhower Matrix (also called the Urgent-Important Matrix) is a productivity framework that helps you prioritize tasks by placing them in one of four quadrants based on urgency and importance. It was popularized by President Dwight D. Eisenhower and later by Stephen Covey in "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People."
What goes in each quadrant? +
Q1 (Do First): Crises, deadlines, emergencies. Q2 (Schedule): Long-term planning, relationships, personal growth. Q3 (Delegate): Interruptions, some meetings, some emails. Q4 (Eliminate): Time-wasters, trivial tasks, mindless scrolling.
What is the difference between urgent and important? +
Urgent tasks demand immediate attention and have a deadline. Important tasks contribute to your long-term goals and values. The key insight is that most high-impact work is important but not urgent — and easily gets crowded out by urgent-but-not-important tasks.
