Standard Work Week

Most countries use a 5-day work week (Monday–Friday). Some Middle Eastern countries use a Sunday–Thursday week.

Business Days vs Calendar Days

A 30-calendar-day month contains approximately 22 working days when excluding weekends.

Project Planning

Frequently Asked Questions

A working day (also called a business day) is any day that is not a weekend (Saturday or Sunday) and not a public holiday. In most countries this means Monday through Friday. The definition can vary: in some Middle Eastern countries (Saudi Arabia, UAE pre-2022), the work week ran Sunday to Thursday. Our calculator excludes weekends (Saturday and Sunday) by default. Public holidays vary by country and are not automatically excluded — you would need to subtract them manually.

The number of working days in a month depends on the specific month and year. On average, there are approximately 21–23 working days per month in a standard 5-day work week. January and March typically have 22 working days. February has 20 (non-leap) to 21 (leap year). Months where the 1st falls on Monday have the maximum working days for that length month.

A standard year has 260–262 working days (52 weeks × 5 days, adjusted for whether Jan 1 and Dec 31 fall on weekdays). After subtracting US federal holidays (11 days), the average US worker has approximately 249 working days per year. In the UK with 8 bank holidays, it's approximately 252. Use this calculator to find the exact working days between January 1 and December 31 for any specific year.

When a shipping company says '5 business days,' they mean 5 Monday–Friday days, excluding weekends and public holidays. If you order on Wednesday, 5 business days = the following Wednesday (skipping Saturday and Sunday). '5 calendar days' from Wednesday means Monday. For legal contracts and financial transactions, always clarify whether deadlines are stated in business days or calendar days — the difference can be several days.

Our calculator excludes weekends automatically. To also exclude public holidays: 1) Calculate the working days between your two dates. 2) Count how many public holidays fall within that range on weekdays. 3) Subtract that number from the result. For example, if our calculator shows 22 working days and there are 2 federal holidays in that period, the actual working days are 20.
